Practice Safe Internet Surfing

Four things you need to do before going on the internet.  (Although these suggestions won't guarantee you won't run into problems, they will definitely increase the odds in your favor.)

  • Install Microsoft Updates - Microsoft has a tendancy to release software with bugs or security holes and then patch the problems.  Make sure your systems are set to apply Microsoft updates.
  • Install a firewall - Protect your computer(s) from the internet by installing either a hardware based firewall or a software firewall.
  • Install Antivirus software - Virus' are running rampant on the internet, make sure you have a current Antivirus package and it's virus definitions are up to date.
  • Install Antispyware software - Surfing websites and downloading "free programs" on the internet is dangerous for your pc.  The old saying "Nothing is free!" is more true then ever on the internet.  Often the "free program" you download and install, has bundled spyware which tracks your internet usage.
